Frequently Asked Questions

No one has all the answers, but I can help navigate with you to find them

  • Short Answer: Yes

Long Answer: I compared the start of therapy like online dating. You read my profile and think we might connect so you swiped RIGHT! I can only speak to my experience, but I know when I met someone for the first few times it’s uncomfortable because they are a stranger.

After some dates/sessions, you will see that we will be comfortable with each other where we can trust each other be our authentic selves.

And if it isn’t a good fit....I want you to tell me!!! I pinkie promise that you will not hurt my feelings if you say that this isn’t working for you anymore. I will help you find another therapist where you might connect better with. because I want you to get the most out of your time and experience!

  • Your guess is as good as mine!

Do not take that as lack of confidence in what I do. I say this because this all depends on you and your goals. Some clients want to engage in long-term therapeutic work, and other people come with a more short-term problem they wish to address. I welcome both approaches and work to support my clients in their progress.

  • You may have already read my approach, this is to provide you with some more details. Each therapy session will look and/or feel different as we might be focusing on specific goal-related needs, digging up past trauma, or just processing what comes up between our sessions. If you see me taking notes, do not be alarmed. Does not mean you said something that was “bad,” but rather it is a way for me to remember important details from our sessions. These notes are shredded once I am done with them. There might be days when I assign homework, provide journal prompts, and activities to do outside of session. These are for you to help gain insight in-between session. We can discuss the homework at next session.

If I feel that something is beyond my skill set, I will provide you with referrals or other resources in order for you to get the most out of this process. With that being said, I value being honest and would hope you can be the same to me. To build a strong relationship I am open to your feedback. This could be that you being uncomfortable with things we discuss, that you are not liking the homework or resources I am providing you, or that I am pushing you too much too soon. This is your therapy! I want you to get the most you can out of it.

  • Counseling, coaching, and sports performance work to help you develop skills and solutions to help you achieve the life you want to be living. I quick rule of thumb is that counselors work on the “why” of the problem, as compared to coaching which focuses on the “how” to get out of the problem. Another way to look at the difference is that counselors will look at the past and coaches will look at the future. Below are some more legal details on how they differ:

    • Following Oregon’s Board of Licensed Professional Counselors & Therapist Scope of Practice

    • Follow ACA’s Code of Ethics

    • Trained in Assessing, Diagnosing, and Treating Mental Health concerns

    • Can only provide services to client’s in the state of Oregon

    • Covered by insurance

    • Not restricted on services provided or what state the person is located in as there is not an organization that oversees how a coach provides treatment

    • Not legally liable for services provided

    • Do not provide diagnoses, and they do not treat mental illness

    • Normally is a short term relationship

    • Services not covered by insurance
